From Sweden to America – A New Chapter

Between the mid-1800s and early 1900s, more than one million Swedes left their homeland, with most seeking a new life in the United States.

They settled especially in the Midwest, where Swedish immigrants became farmers, craftsmen, engineers, entrepreneurs and community builders. They helped develop agriculture, industry and growing American cities, while establishing churches, schools, newspapers and businesses.

Swedish-Americans also contributed to American innovation and industry. Among the best-known examples are John Ericsson, whose engineering played an important role during the American Civil War, and the many Swedish immigrants who brought technical skills, craftsmanship and a strong tradition of entrepreneurship.

Today, millions of Americans have Swedish ancestry—a lasting connection between Sweden and the United States.
